How to
apply Aunty Nelly’s French Polish. |
|
Before even opening Aunty Nelly’s French Polish
ensure that your preparation is complete. As no matter how much effort
you put in later it will not mask your lack of initial preparation.
To prepare your surface ensure that it has been
thoroughly and completely sanded and any holes and blemishes have been
filled with appropriate filler. This includes after your final sanding
be careful not to rub your hand across the surface, as this will add
oils from your skin that may stain the surface and ruin your finish.
When you are happy with
your preparation of the surface take a tack rag (cloth moistened with
Methylated spirits) and wipe the entire surface along the grain (or on
intricate detail use a moistened brush) to remove any last sanding
reside and dust that may have settled and if left unchecked will ruin
your finish. |

Should you wish to stain
the item it must be done now! |

Aunty Nelly’s French Polish can be applied in
numerous ways each have their own merits depending on the piece of
furniture. The 2 most popular methods are listed below.
For small intricate or
heavily carved areas the Polish is best applied using a French polishing
mop. This is a fine soft haired brush that is available at better paint
stores or can be ordered through Aunty Nelly. |
|
For larger flat areas
Aunty Nelly recommends application by a dolly. |
|
How to make a Dolly to
apply Aunty Nelly’s French Polish. |
|
Use a lint free cloth the size of a napkin (the best
ones are old linen napkins) however an old well washed T Shirt will also
work well. Lay the dolly out flat and place a fist-sized amount of
cotton wadding (or cotton wool balls) in the centre.
Wrap the cotton wadding by lifting the corners of the
cloth and twisting to create a tight ball shape that is wrinkle free.
Once it is wrinkle free on the underside tie the top off with either
string or a rubber band leaving free “ears” which are in fact the
corners of the cloth for you to hold.
The dolly will give the
best results on large flat surfaces such as tabletops and cabinets. |
|
When using a dolly
follow the application directions below to lay down the finish. |
 |
|
You may add subsequent layers if desired. After you
are satisfied with the build up of the finish you can give a final
sanding using Aunty Nelly’s Talc Sand to remove any imperfections. Then
polish the surface with Aunty Nelly’s Liquid Polish for an ultimate high
gloss finish or if you prefer a lower sheen finish with Aunty Nelly’s
Beeswax Polish.
